Annual Macabre 1997,this was the first of a projected series of annual volumes, scheduled to appear in the period between Halloween and Christmas each year. The series was designed to present small, quality supernatural tales by those who are not necessarily associated with writing in the genre, offering readers something different from the usual fare. The concept was to showcase the supernatural fiction of writers who might be better known for other types of work, demonstrating the breadth and diversity of the field.

For this first volume, Jack Adrian gathered together four weird stories by women writers whose supernatural output is small. The collection features "A Wedding Day" by Patricia Wentworth, "The Swaying Vision" by Jessie Douglas Kerruish, "The Visitor" by Carola Oman, and "The House of the Laburnums" by Mollie Panter-Downes. These writers were not primarily known as supernatural fiction authors, but their contributions to the genre demonstrate that effective weird tales can come from unexpected sources.
